My Grandmother’s Brooch
In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Symbol.”
In the generations before us they didn’t have a lot of things unless belonging to the upper class. From my grandmother Asta I have this brooch resembling a Viking shield. in 1800s the poets and authors liked to describe the time of the Vikings. Even some names were chosen from the Icelandic sagas. Maybe that’s why the brooch looks like it does.

I remember my grandmother with some different brooches on her collar or to pin together the front of a dress. This one is the only one that exist of her trinkets. This following photo was sent to my grandfather as he had put and advertisement in a Copenhagen paper in 1919 wanting to find a new wife as his first wife had recently died in the Spanish flu. One of these photos was sent to Emry via the contact advertisement in the News paper.
Looking at my old precious photos I discovered the same brooch on Asta’s mother on a photo taken when she was engaged to be married to Villiam in 1889 and again when Asta was about 8 years old.
I never wear it as it is completely out of fashion and easy to lose due to no lock at the needle behind it. But I still think it is precious to have it and to track it down to at least 1889. I am quite convinced that it was old even then.
At last two photos as I remember my grandmother when I was a child. I am not sure that she wears the same brooch but she always wore a brooch on her clothes.

How fortunate you are to have this family history and this family brooch. Why don’t you get it fixed and wear it? I think it is extraordinarily beautiful.

I am so glad that I am able to share pictures and stories from my family. After I am gone there will be nobody who knows about it.

My grandmother always wore a brooch, as well as a hat secured with a hatpin! It wasn’t done “in her day” to go out without hat and gloves.
