Finally, I Am A Patient At Our New Hospital

My children have teased me that I love our new hospital and should become a patient there. Last Sunday, I returned home after an intensive week in Copenhagen. I was so thankful for running around everywhere with my grandchildren and running many 10K and Half Marathons even though my age goes upward every day.

A week ago, I experienced a sudden fall on a slippery bathroom floor, which resulted in me landing on my forearm and breaking it. Henry was there to help me during the stressful hours that followed. However, we couldn’t go straight to the ICU ward, so we had to visit my medical doctor first. Being aware of my broken arm, this caused some inconvenience.

Finally, I was allowed to go to the new hospital to have my arm examined. After hours of waiting, a skilled doctor, Ali, could put my arm together in the right shape. He didn’t want me to focus on how many fractures I had, only to follow his instructions to heal.

The hospital is situated only a few kilometres from our house and serves people in a considerable area around us. It was ten years on its way and beautifully built in white and colours matching the surrounding fields. We can see the buildings from our house. Today, I discovered a new bus connection from us to the hospital. I don’t need a car to go there. A Cafeteria is available for staff, visitors, and patients during the daytime. In the last week, I have eaten their healthy lunch three times, as preparing meals with one hand is challenging.

I am looking forward to regaining my full function, and the lesson learnt is ALWAYS to wipe up anything slippery from the floor.

Doing everything with one hand and having a heavy cast on the other arm is manageable but challenging. But I am forever thankful for dr Ali’s competence and for being there at the right moment. He is now on holiday and told me for fun that I could call him for assistance in Italy. I hugged him after the treatment, and my children were correct in their assumption; I like that new hospital.

  1. It is indeed quite a beautiful facility, however I am concerned as to why you must have waited and not gone there immediately? So grateful for your excellent doctor and you are on the mend!

    • I appreciate your concern. It’s genuinely a bureaucratic system where your home doctor has to decide if you can go. Maybe I could have called 112 directly had I been home alone. I would have, of course

  2. Oh no, one of my favorite people with a broken wing I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something. Please take care of yourself.
    You’re a good husband, Henry!

    • Thank you, GP. You are among our favourite people. Maybe I needed a bit of attention from my friends. At least I can write with one hand and tell you that I am alive. And Happy belated Independence Day. Henry has not laid down blogging but has had a lot to do with helping his PHd students
