Johannes Larsen, the Danish Bird Painter
Johannes Larsen (born 1867- 1961) was a Danish painter specialising in painting birds. He was born and died in the small coastal town of Kerteminde on the island of Funen.
Recently, my husband and I drove two hours to visit this lovely place with a museum and the painter’s home and garden. We have an artist friend, Simon Bang from Copenhagen, who had a massive painting at a special exhibition on birds. We wanted to see his image among the other selected items.
In this blog, I will show you the surroundings and selected pictures from the special exhibition. For once, we had sunshine and a blue sky which made the trip more memorable.

Simon Bang is our good friend. He is both a gifted painter and filmmaker on historical subjects. His large painting “Landscape with 9 Storks 2021” had a central place at the exhibition. We had a guided tour of the works, and the guide mentioned that people objected to the number of storks. The tenth bird is not a stork, though.

When I was about nine years old, my grandmother gave me Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling” with illustrations by Johannes Larsen. Somehow, I have lost it after all these years. Luckily, I found a new book edition in the museum’s shop.

What a delightful exhibition. I will comment on only Simon Bangs painting of the nine storks. The painting of the birds are great but I really liked the way he painted the scenery in red. Very spectacular.

I will love to tell him what you wrote here. This use of colours is his style. On another note, he just got rewarded for a documentary film on his maternal grandfather, who sailed as a captain for more than fifty years on all the seas. Survived both the first and the second world Wars but not without scars

Thanks Palsoren, I am very happy about your comment about my painting. Thanks for watching. The painting is large: it measures 150 x 300 cm and seems fierce with its flaming colors, the 9 storks and one pelican.

Yes Simon, I love the contrast between the red nose everywhere and the birds that were just black-and-white.

That was exactly the idea with that contrast. Thanks for noticing 🙂

I’ve always liked birds, but as I grew older I found I appreciated them more and more.
